Franco Paoloantonio

Portrait Painter

(Vasto 1887 +Genoa 1979)

By Paolo Calvano

After completing his middle high school and his artistic attempts (with portraits dated 1904-6) he enrolled at the Academy of Art in Naples, then Rome and finally Florence where in 1907 he went to the School of Nudism. In 1908 he migrated to South America, joining up with his family and opened a studio in Buenos Aires and dedicated himself exclusively to portraiture.

After a few years he went to Santiago Del Chile where he continued his artistic activities from 1912 to 1950, achieving a notable success in the academic environment and became one the most sought after portrait painter of South America to whom politicians, ecclesiastics and public figures turned to become immortalised. In those years he was also nominated director Arts at the Catholic University in Santiago.

At the end of the 1950s the painter returned to Italy, and established himself in Genoa (where he set up a studio where he continued to paint portraits on commission) with an occasional visit to Vasto.

His later works (in the 1960s and 1970s) are of still life, which were an absolute novelty in his artistic career. Paoloantonio died in Genoa 11 January 1979.
